A 68-year-old woman died after she was allegedly set ablaze by her stepson in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. The accused, a middle-aged man, has been arrested by the police.

According to police officials, the victim, identified as Sushma Devi, a resident of Housing Colony in Udhampur, sustained 60–70 per cent burn injuries after her stepson allegedly poured diesel on her and set her on fire.

She was initially rushed to the District Hospital in Udhampur in critical condition. Given the severity of her injuries, she was subsequently referred to Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, for specialised treatment. However, she later succumbed to her injuries.

Police have arrested the accused in connection with the incident. An investigation has been initiated to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and determine the motive behind it.
