At least seven people were killed, and several others were feared trapped after an avalanche struck Zero Point at Zojila Pass on Friday, officials said. Rescue operations were launched after five vehicles were buried under heavy snow.
According to an update, 7 people died, one person remains missing, and five others were injured after vehicles were caught in the avalanche at the site. A senior police officer said that a passenger vehicle was among those hit at Zero Point, leading to fatalities at the scene.
The officer added that the sudden and intense avalanche engulfed multiple vehicles, killing six occupants on the spot, while five others sustained injuries, and one person is still unaccounted for.
The injured have been shifted to nearby medical centres for treatment, and rescue efforts are ongoing. Ganderbal Police, along with disaster management authorities, are conducting operations to rescue those trapped. The ill-fated vehicles were headed to Kargil from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.
