Domestic airline IndiGo's chief executive officer Pieter Elbers has resigned on March 10, the company said in a statement. The airline's board of directors held a meeting on Tuesday and accepted Elbers' resignation, saying he will be relieved with immediate effect.
"We wish to inform you that the Board of Directors of the Company, at its meeting held today, i.e., March 10, 2026, inter-alia, took note of the resignation tendered by Mr. Pieter Elbers,
Chief Executive Officer. He will be relieved from the service of the Company effective close of business hours on March 10, 2026.

The airline's managing director Rahul Bhatia will assume interim charge of the company, the statement said. Bhatia’s InterGlobe Enterprises is the largest shareholder in IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, holding a 35.69 percent stake as of December.

The stock of IndiGo parent InterGlobe Aviation closed 3.46 percent higher on March 10 at Rs 4,382.45 on BSE.

Elbers, in his resignation letter to the board, said he is stepping down from his position due to "personal reasons" and requested the company to waive off his notice period.

"As per our conversation, due to personal reasons, I herewith submit my resignation from the

position of CEO of IndiGo with effect from today. I would request that notice period may be

waived off," he said in the letter.

The development comes a few months after IndiGo witnessed a flight chaos in December, resulting in massive delays and cancellation of around 4,5000 flights across the country.

The airline later apologised to passengers, attributing the cancellations to delays in adjusting crew rosters to comply with stricter government rules on pilot fatigue. According to a Moneycontrol report, the operational disruption caused a Rs 2,000-crore loss for the airline.
