All four large ponds constructed under Project Him Sarovar at Spituk Farka in Leh have been filled with glacier meltwater within five months, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said in a post on X.

Saxena said construction of the four ponds began on April 10, 2026, and concluded with the recharge and operationalisation of the fourth pond on September 9.

According to the LG, Pond No. 1 was inaugurated on June 21, Pond No. 2 was filled on July 19, Pond No. 3 on August 24 and Pond No. 4 on September 9.

Each pond measures 60 metres by 40 metres by 2 metres and is designed to store approximately 60 lakh litres of glacier meltwater. Together, the four ponds can store nearly 24 million litres of water, he said.

Saxena said the stored water would help create a new command area of nearly 1,000 acres while supporting irrigation, ecological restoration and long-term water security.

He said the ponds are being directly replenished by glacier meltwater from the Stok glacier stream, with seasonal flows diverted into the Igoo-Phey Canal to feed the reservoirs.

“This diversion ensures that huge volumes of water, earlier wasted, are now conserved for irrigation, ecological restoration, and long-term water security,” Saxena said.

The LG said the achievement reflected the administration’s commitment to environmental resilience, agricultural revival and sustainable water security in Ladakh’s cold desert.
